The deal: two players get 6 cards and put 2 in the dealer's crib; three players get 5, put 1 in, and one card from the deck joins them. The player on the dealer's right cuts the starter — a Jack pays the dealer 2 (his heels).
Pegging: take turns laying a card, keeping the count to 31 or less. Score 2 for making 15 or 31, 2 for a pair (6 for three, 12 for four), and a run of 3 or more for its length. If you can't play you say Go; the last player to lay a card scores 1 (2 at 31) and the count starts again.
The show: starting left of the dealer, each hand is counted with the starter: 2 for each 15, pairs, runs, a flush (4 in the hand, 5 with the starter; the crib needs all 5), and 1 for his nobs (the Jack of the starter's suit). The dealer then counts the crib.
Muggins (if chosen): you count your own hand. Claim too many and you're corrected; miss points and an opponent can call Muggins! and take them.
First to 121 (or 61) wins — the moment it happens. Finish before the loser reaches the skunk line (91, or 31 in a 61 game) for a skunk; before 61 is a double skunk.
