52 cards plus 2 Jokers, 2β9 players. Each hand deals one card fewer (or more) than the last β up then down, down then up, or just one way, as the host chose. The biggest (or smallest) hand at the turn is played twice.
After the deal the next card is turned up: its suit is trumps. If it's a Joker, or every card was dealt, there are no trumps that hand.
Bidding: starting after the dealer, each player in turn says how many tricks they'll take β everyone sees the bids before theirs. The dealer bids last and can't make the bids add up to the number of cards (so somebody always misses).
Playing: the player after the dealer leads. Follow suit if you can; otherwise play anything. The highest trump wins the trick, or the highest card of the suit led. The winner leads next.
Jokers are the highest trumps β they beat even the Ace of trumps, and still win in a no-trump hand. If both Jokers are in one trick, the first one played wins. When trumps are led, a Joker counts as a trump.
Scoring: make your bid exactly and score 10 + your bid (a bid of 0 made is 10). Miss it and lose one point for every trick you were off by β too many or too few. Highest total at the end wins.
